Mike's Kids is an annual Christmas toy drive for poor and abandoned
children on both sides of the border. The program has become a national model.
The Mike’s Kids program was founded by a young man with a big heart named
Mike Slaight. After Mike died of a sudden brain aneurism, the program continued
under Mike Slaight’s father, Hank, for more than a decade. Today, the program
is overseen by Mike’s children, Mark Slaight and
Christina Gill, a longtime
family friend, Marvin Carter, and his wife, Treena. With the help of hundreds
of volunteers from many denominations who collect and pack thousands of items
of clothing and toys from the North Texas area,
the program continues to grow.
An 18 wheel truck with more than 1,600 banana boxes
delivers new and gently-used clothes and toys, which are distributed to poor and
abandoned children across the Lower Rio Grand Valley.
