Rev. Pereira Receives First Romero Award

In front of an audience of over 100 chamber supports at the annual Los Fresnos Area Chamber Banquet, the Rev. Filiberto Pereira received the inaugural Dora Romero Award. In an emotional moment Rev. Pereira thanked the Chamber, the City, and the Romero family for the recognition. “This is a tremendous honor, I knew Dora, and she was a beautiful person. I want to express my love for this community, especially to the Romero family.”

Rev. Pereira was recognized for his incredible history of sacrifice for his beliefs and values. A native of Cuba, the Rev. Pereira was incarcerated in Castro’s hard labor camps for years because he would not sign documentation denouncing his religious faith. Through good fortune he was able to arrive in the United States where he began his ministry. Upon arriving in Los Fresnos, Rev. Pereira quickly began volunteering in the community serving on the board of the Chamber of Commerce and is currently serving as minister of the Ebenezer Christian Church. He has also been executive director of the Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries which assists refugees fleeing persecution.
